What is Brain
Gym®?
Brain Gym® is a practical, dynamic, personal development
program that benefits people of all ages. It is easy and fun
to use both individually and with groups. The easy-to-do,
patterned movements target brain function to promote optimal
learning and performance by activating neurological pathways
in the brain. The specific movements and postures are designed
to bring attention and energy away from the survival centers
of the brain, to activate both cortical hemispheres, stimulate
myelination across the corpus callosum, and to promote integrated
visual, auditory, and kinesthetic functioning for ease in
learning and performance.
Brain Gym® exercises create a readiness of mind and body
through simple, energizing body movements. Participants often
experience significant improvement in concentration, organization,
communication, and memory.
Brain Gym® is part of the Educational Kinesiology (Edu-K)
system, which is based on the idea that all learning occurs
through movement. It was developed by Paul E. Dennison, Ph.D.,
an educational therapist who was looking for ways to help
children and adults identified as learning disabled. Using
more than 30 years of research and observations, Dr. Dennison
has infused information and techniques from a variety of fields
including applied kinesiology, motor development, optometry,
acupressure, language development, and psychology. His work
is used privately and in classrooms in more than 80 countries
world wide.
Spotlight Movements
P.A.C.E. consists of four of the 26 basic Brain Gym® activities
that are done in a sequence. These activities prepare the
physiology of the body to be Positive, Active, Clear, and
Energetic. Water provides energy for the electrical activities
in the brain. Brain Buttons give the brain an oxygen "jump
start". Cross Crawls activate both hemispheres of the
brain and both sides of the body in balanced, integrated manner.
Hook-Ups brings a positive, calm flow of energy from head
to toe. P.A.C.E. takes less than 5 minutes and is a great
way to get your brain/body system in a state of readiness
for optimal learning and performance.
